good evening, my fellow americans.
first, i should like to express my gratitude to the radio and television networks for the opportunities they have given me over the years to bring reports and messages to our nation. my special thanks go to them for the opportunity of addressing you this evening.
three days from now, after half century in the service of our country, i shall lay down the responsibilities of office as, in traditional and solemn ceremony, the authority of the presidency is vested in my successor. this evening, i come to you with a message of leave-taking and farewell, and to share a few final thoughts with you, my countrymen.
like every other -- like every other citizen, i wish the new president, and all who will labor with him, godspeed. i pray that the coming years will be blessed with peace and prosperity for all.
our people expect their president and the congress to find essential agreement on issues of great moment, the wise resolution of which will better shape the future of the nation. my own relations with the congress, which began on a remote and tenuous basis when, long ago, a member of the senate appointed me to west point, have since ranged to the intimate during the war and immediate post-war period, and finally to the mutually interdependent during these past eight years. in this final relationship, the congress and the administration have, on most vital issues, cooperated well, to serve the nation good, rather than mere partisanship, and so have assured that the business of the nation should go forward. so, my official relationship with the congress ends in a feeling -- on my part -- of gratitude that we have been able to do so much together.
we now stand ten years past the midpoint of a century that has witnessed four major wars among great nations. three of these involved our own country. despite these holocausts, america is today the strongest, the most influential, and most productive nation in the world. understandably proud of this pre-eminence, we yet realize that america's leadership and prestige depend, not merely upon our unmatched material progress, riches, and military strength, but on how we use our power in the interests of world peace and human betterment.
throughout america's adventure in free government, our basic purposes have been to keep the peace, to foster progress in human achievement, and to enhance liberty, dignity, and integrity among peoples and among nations. to strive for less would be unworthy of a free and religious people. any failure traceable to arrogance, or our lack of comprehension, or readiness to sacrifice would inflict upon us grievous hurt, both at home and abroad.
progress toward these noble goals is persistently threatened by the conflict now engulfing the world. it commands our whole attention, absorbs our very beings. we face a hostile ideology global in scope, atheistic in character, ruthless in purpose, and insiduous [insidious] in method. unhappily, the danger it poses promises to be of indefinite duration. to meet it successfully, there is called for, not so much the emotional and transitory sacrifices of crisis, but rather those which enable us to carry forward steadily, surely, and without complaint the burdens of a prolonged and complex struggle with liberty the stake. only thus shall we remain, despite every provocation, on our charted course toward permanent peace and human betterment.
crises there will continue to be. in meeting them, whether foreign or domestic, great or small, there is a recurring temptation to feel that some spectacular and costly action could become the miraculous solution to all current difficulties. a huge increase in newer elements of our defenses; development of unrealistic programs to cure every ill in agriculture; a dramatic expansion in basic and applied research -- these and many other possibilities, each possibly promising in itself, may be suggested as the only way to the road we wish to travel.
but each proposal must be weighed in the light of a broader consideration: the need to maintain balance in and among national programs, balance between the private and the public economy, balance between the cost and hoped for advantages, balance between the clearly necessary and the comfortably desirable, balance between our essential requirements as a nation and the duties imposed by the nation upon the individual, balance between actions of the moment and the national welfare of the future. good judgment seeks balance and progress. lack of it eventually finds imbalance and frustration. the record of many decades stands as proof that our people and their government have, in the main, understood these truths and have responded to them well, in the face of threat and stress.
but threats, new in kind or degree, constantly arise. of these, i mention two only.
a vital element in keeping the peace is our military establishment. our arms must be mighty, ready for instant action, so that no potential aggressor may be tempted to risk his own destruction. our military organization today bears little relation to that known of any of my predecessors in peacetime, or, indeed, by the fighting men of world war ii or korea.
until the latest of our world conflicts, the united states had no armaments industry. american makers of plowshares could, with time and as required, make swords as well. but we can no longer risk emergency improvisation of national defense. we have been compelled to create a permanent armaments industry of vast proportions. added to this, three and a half million men and women are directly engaged in the defense establishment. we annually spend on military security alone more than the net income of all united states cooperations -- corporations.
now this conjunction of an immense military establishment and a large arms industry is new in the american experience. the total influence -- economic, political, even spiritual -- is felt in every city, every statehouse, every office of the federal government. we recognize the imperative need for this development. yet, we must not fail to comprehend its grave implications. our toil, resources, and livelihood are all involved. so is the very structure of our society.
in the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. the potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist. we must never let the weight of this combination endanger our liberties or democratic processes. we should take nothing for granted. only an alert and knowledgeable citizenry can compel the proper meshing of the huge industrial and military machinery of defense with our peaceful methods and goals, so that security and liberty may prosper together.
akin to, and largely responsible for the sweeping changes in our industrial-military posture, has been the technological revolution during recent decades. in this revolution, research has become central; it also becomes more formalized, complex, and costly. a steadily increasing share is conducted for, by, or at the direction of, the federal government.
today, the solitary inventor, tinkering in his shop, has been overshadowed by task forces of scientists in laboratories and testing fields. in the same fashion, the free university, historically the fountainhead of free ideas and scientific discovery, has experienced a revolution in the conduct of research. partly because of the huge costs involved, a government contract becomes virtually a substitute for intellectual curiosity. for every old blackboard there are now hundreds of new electronic computers. the prospect of domination of the nation's scholars by federal employment, project allocations, and the power of money is ever present -- and is gravely to be regarded.
yet, in holding scientific research and discovery in respect, as we should, we must also be alert to the equal and opposite danger that public policy could itself become the captive of a scientific-technological elite.
it is the task of statesmanship to mold, to balance, and to integrate these and other forces, new and old, within the principles of our democratic system -- ever aiming toward the supreme goals of our free society.
another factor in maintaining balance involves the element of time. as we peer into society's future, we -- you and i, and our government -- must avoid the impulse to live only for today, plundering for our own ease and convenience the precious resources of tomorrow. we cannot mortgage the material assets of our grandchildren without risking the loss also of their political and spiritual heritage. we want democracy to survive for all generations to come, not to become the insolvent phantom of tomorrow.
during the long lane of the history yet to be written, america knows that this world of ours, ever growing smaller, must avoid becoming a community of dreadful fear and hate, and be, instead, a proud confederation of mutual trust and respect. such a confederation must be one of equals. the weakest must come to the conference table with the same confidence as do we, protected as we are by our moral, economic, and military strength. that table, though scarred by many fast frustrations -- past frustrations, cannot be abandoned for the certain agony of disarmament -- of the battlefield.
disarmament, with mutual honor and confidence, is a continuing imperative. together we must learn how to compose differences, not with arms, but with intellect and decent purpose. because this need is so sharp and apparent, i confess that i lay down my official responsibilities in this field with a definite sense of disappointment. as one who has witnessed the horror and the lingering sadness of war, as one who knows that another war could utterly destroy this civilization which has been so slowly and painfully built over thousands of years, i wish i could say tonight that a lasting peace is in sight.
happily, i can say that war has been avoided. steady progress toward our ultimate goal has been made. but so much remains to be done. as a private citizen, i shall never cease to do what little i can to help the world advance along that road.
so, in this, my last good night to you as your president, i thank you for the many opportunities you have given me for public service in war and in peace. i trust in that -- in that -- in that service you find some things worthy. as for the rest of it, i know you will find ways to improve performance in the future.
you and i, my fellow citizens, need to be strong in our faith that all nations, under god, will reach the goal of peace with justice. may we be ever unswerving in devotion to principle, confident but humble with power, diligent in pursuit of the nations' great goals.
to all the peoples of the world, i once more give expression to america's prayerful and continuing aspiration: we pray that peoples of all faiths, all races, all nations, may have their great human needs satisfied; that those now denied opportunity shall come to enjoy it to the full; that all who yearn for freedom may experience its few spiritual blessings. those who have freedom will understand, also, its heavy responsibility; that all who are insensitive to the needs of others will learn charity; and that the sources -- scourges of poverty, disease, and ignorance will be made [to] disappear from the earth; and that in the goodness of time, all peoples will come to live together in a peace guaranteed by the binding force of mutual respect and love.
now, on friday noon, i am to become a private citizen. i am proud to do so. i look forward to it.
thank you, and good night.
In the summer recess between freshman and sophomore years in college, I wasinvited to be an instructor at a high school leadership camp hosted by a collegein Michigan. I was already highly involved in most campus activities, and Ijumped at the opportunity.
About an hour into the first day of camp, amid the frenzy of icebreakersand forced interactions, I first noticed the boy under the tree. He was smalland skinny, and his obvious discomfort and shyness made him appear frail andfragile. Only 50 feet away, 200 eager campers were bumping bodies, playing, joking and meeting each other, but the boy under the tree seemed to want to beanywhere other than where he was. The desperate loneliness he radiated almoststopped me from approaching him, but I remembered the instructions from thesenior staff to stay alert for campers who might feel left out.
As I walked toward him I said, “Hi, my name is Kevin and I’m one of thecounselors. It’s nice to meet you. How are you?”
In a shaky, sheepish voice he reluctantly answered, “Okay, I guess.”
I calmly asked him if he wanted to join the activities and meet some newpeople. He quietly replied, “No, this is not really my thing.”
I could sense that he was in a new world, that this whole experience wasforeign to him. But I somehow knew it wouldn’t be right to push him, either. Hedidn’t need a pep talk, he needed a friend. After several silent moments, myfirst interaction with the boy under the tree was over.
At lunch the next day, I found myself leading camp songs at the top of mylungs for 200 of my new friends. The campers were eagerly participated. My gazewandered over the mass of noise and movement and was caught by the image of theboy from under the tree, sitting alone, staring out the window. I nearly forgotthe words to the song I was supposed to be leading. At my first opportunity, Itried again, with the same questions as before: “How are you doing? Are youokay?”
To which he again replied, “Yeah, I’m all right. I just don’t really getinto this stuff. ”
As I left the cafeteria, I too realized this was going to take more timeand effort than I had thought — if it was even possible to get through to him atall.
That evening at our nightly staff meeting, I made my concerns about himknown. I explained to my fellow staff members my impression of him and askedthem to pay special attention and spend time with him when they could.
The days I spend at camp each year fly by faster than any others I haveknown. Thus, before I knew it, mid-week had dissolved into the final night ofcamp and I was chaperoning the “last dance”. The students were doing all theycould to savor every last moment with their new “best friends” — friends theywould probably never see again.
As I watched the campers share their parting moments, I suddenly saw whatwould be one of the most vivid memories of my life. The boy from under the tree, who stared blankly out the kitchen window, was now a shirtless dancing wonder. He owned the dance floor as he and two girls proceeded to cut up a rug. Iwatched as he shared meaningful, intimate time with people at whom he couldn’teven look just days earlier. I couldn’t believe it was him. In October of mysophomore year, a late-night phone call pulled me away from my chemistry book. Asoft-spoken, unfamiliar voice asked politely, “Is Kevin there?”
“You’re talking to him. Who’s this?”
“This is Tom Johnson’s mom. Do you remember Tommy from leadership camp?”
The boy under the tree. How could I not remember? “Yes, I do”, I said.“He’s a very nice young man. How is he?”
An abnormally long pause followed, then Mrs. Johnson said, “My Tommy waswalking home from school this week when he was hit by a car and killed.”Shocked, I offered my condolences.
“I just wanted to call you”, she said, “because Tommy mentioned you so manytimes. I wanted you to know that he went back to school this fall withconfidence. He made new friends. His grades went up. And he even went out on afew dates. I just wanted to thank you for making a difference for Tom. The lastfew months were the best few months of his life.”
In that instant, I realized how easy it is to give a bit of yourself everyday. You may never know how much each gesture may mean to someone else. I tellthis story as often as I can, and when I do, I urge others to look out for theirown “boy under the tree.”
i'll tell you an experience of myself happened last week. last thursday our school was tackling something about woking fou study. i wanted to have a try even though i knew the salary was so low and i had little chance, because the students who had the certificate were always thought to have priority to get the job. fortunately i was called at noon and a teacher said to me that she wanted me to work for her and asked if i could change my mind. at that moment i was so excited that immediately i accepted her idea. but later on,she found me that i'm not a student,so i had little chance and suggest me to get one. then an idea occurred to me that i could call my father and ask him to send me the letter. at the same time i was told that i was admitted to the job and don't need the certificate. that time i forgot to remind my father, until the next day he called me that he had posted it and it would arrive in just one day. at that moment i was moved, and even moved into tears, because i knew my father was injured not long before, the process of helping me with the affairs was not so convenient for him. but he tried his best to help me. sometimes we may complain about unsatisfying things around us,and blame them on our parents, sometimes they'll be angry with us, and sometimes we can't quite understand what they are thinking about. but on balance, almost every parent is selfless to his or her child. they are ready to offer everything to us when we are in bad situation. we used to sharing sorrow with them, but do not forget to share our happiness with them, perhaps they will be much happier than we are. so from now on, let's care more about our parents and do not leave pity to them. that's what i want to tell you today. thank you!

hello! i wonder whether everybody knows the meaning of these two words of “ energy-conservation ” and “ low carbon ”? i assume as a matter of course and know. does “ energy-conservation ” save the energy? does “ low carbon ” reduce carbon emission? yes, it is really simple. we often chat about them. but, do you really understand them? have they really taken root on your bottom of heart deeply?
once, the earth mother left our rich energy to cause us to be jubilant, sighed on earth's energy inexhaustible, inexhaustible, now, the newest statistics indicated, the petroleum will dry up after 60 years, the coal also might supply the humanity to use for 250 years; once, developed first, the environment question the situation which neglected is often occurred, now, the sustainable development, was together harmoniously with the nature the biggest topic.not difficult to see, the environment question in is taken unceasingly by the people.for all this, the environment question was still stern, the energy conservation reduced the platoon, the low-carbon lives imminently.at the copenhagen climate congress, this affects the human destiny the question slowly to be unable to reach the agreement actually.in the life, is driving the great displacement automobile, purchases including the fluorine air conditioning, the refrigerator, including the phosphorus laundry powder, turns on the air.
conditioning the low temperature also one side to bind in the summer the quilt, the daylight lamp is being long all night clearly, water cock water drop sound day and night not rest these influence environment phenomenon common occurrence.this is rebels with ours position. american president kennedy has said: do not have to ask the country can make any for us, must ask first oneself can make any for the country.the low-carbon life needs everybody to participation!the low-carbon life first is one kind of life manner.so long as wants, each person may be able to achieve! the electricity saving, saves gas and oil, the solar terms, saving water, the tree-planting, makes use of waste, by step generation of vehicle the intravenous drip, in life each aspect, all may choose the low-carbon life the manner.the low-carbon life is also representing one kind healthily, the more natural life style.little eats counter-season food, the generation by works as season food; little uses the disposable product, the generation by the duplicated things; little rides an overhead traveling crane, little sits one time the elevator, the generation rides the bicycle, crawls the staircase, while falls the low-carbon withdrawal, we will have a healthier body and mind.we believed, so long as everybody works as one, participation together, humanity's tomorrow certainly will be able to be happier! schoolmates, today, your low-carbon?

For interpersonal relationships, I gradually summed up one of the most in line with the principle of my nature, that is, mutual respect and affinity. I believe that all good friendship is formed naturally and not deliberately obtained. I also think that no matter how good of friends should have a distance, the friendship is too often crowded empty.
Get along with others, especially if you are relaxed, in a relaxed and feel of the real lessons learned, I bet you, you must have encountered the same, even if you are engaged in different occupations.
Philosophers, poets, musicians, artists have their own jargon. Sometimes, the different meaning of the same jargon said. Sometimes, speaking with a different meaning of jargon.
but can not climb the hills, the gap between the soul of it is insurmountable. Peer jargon we say, spit out the voice of a friend.
Among the most profound distinction is not professional, and in the soul.
Friendship is a kind of human relations. It is a human instinct to make friends. When in trouble, we need friends to offer us help, support and encouragement. With success achieved, we also need friends to share our joys.
Friendship is also one of the greatest pleasures that we can enjoy. It implies loyalty, cordiality, sympathy, affection, and readiness to help. No man can make the most of his life without carefully and conscientiously striving to win the right kind of friends as he goes along.
Knowing how valuable friendship is, we should be very careful in making friends. Real friends are those who have good character, superior ability and kindness of heart. Real friends can share all our sorrows and double all our joys. While making friends, we should take care to select those who have such fine qualities. Then we should treat our friends with courtesy, be careful not to interfere unreasonably with them, and not to ridicule their proceedings. We should forgive their failures and do our best to help them. In short, when we have established friendship, we ought to cherish and treasure it by means of words and deeds. Only thus, can we develop real friendship and keep the sacred lamp of friendship burning all our life.
As is vividly depicted in the picture , with a clear cracking sound , two bowls clashed into each other , in which the shinning one keeps its integrity , whereas the shabby one breaks into pieces. Just like being symbolically revealed in the set of drawing, the fact that the intact bowl, as a symbol of soly-invested companies , overwhelms the broken bowl representing the state-owned companies, with collision standing for fierce companies, profoundly indicates that it is time that our state-owned companies entailed reform especially after china’s entry into WTO when facing soly-invested companies abroad.
To the popular mind , it is immediately assumed that when reform in state-owned companies is argued ,it is car industry that is meant. To account for the above-mentioned phenomenon , several points should be figured out. For one thing, some of car industries once enjoyed the glorious past , They have ,however, gradually lost their market shares when soly –invested companies were sweeping into domestic market. For another , in order to turn the corner ,the leaders of them should adopt the policy of reform such as acquisition, re-engineering and introduction of advanced technology and concepts of management. No better illustration of this idea can be thought than the example mentioned below, No 1 Motor Vehicle Plant has witnessed from predicament to rejuvenation through none other than effective steps mentioned above. Therefore ,no issue is as critical to individual and national survival and prosperity as reform in state-owned companies.
Accordingly , it is vital for us to derive some positive meanings from this thought-provoking picture. It is ,hence, necessary that efforts be made to follow the spirit of reform concerning state-owned companies. On one hand, the government should make law to perfect irrational rules and regulations being visible in reform process. On the other hand, the leaders of state-owned companies should enhance the awareness of reform by undergoing these steps ,can our more state-owned companies become members of Top 500 in the world, which, indeed, has gone to the heart of maintaining good momentum of national economy growth.
“We are reading the first verse of the first chapter of a book whose pagesare infinite…”
I do not know who wrote those words, but I have always liked them as areminder that the future can be anything we want to make it。 We can take themysterious, hazy future and carve out of it anything that we can imagine, justas a sculptor carves a statue from a shapeless stone。
We are all in the position of the farmer。 If we plant a good seed,we reapa good harvest。 If our seed is poor and full of weeds,we reap a useless crop。If we plant nothing at all,we harvest nothing at all。
I want the future to be better than the past。 I don’t want it contaminatedby the mistakes and errors with which history is filled。 We should all beconcerned about the future because that is where we will spend the remainder ofour lives。
The past is gone and static。 Nothing we can do will change it。 The futureis before us and dynamic。 Everything we do will affect it。 Each day brings withit new frontiers,in our homes and in our business,if we only recognize them。We are just at the beginning of the progress in every field of humanendeavor。

Respect teacher, dear students: everyone!
Come on when I was thinking to use don't have to do a self-introduction, I think or very be necessary after doing a, first of all, I know people don't have to know me, because I'm not a star, then do a self-introduction one any good? Is convenient in your criticism or critical to name names, not thinking of when I pointed to my nose but doesn't know by name, I will be worried about you. It will be a very painful thing.
My name is xx, not surnamed liu, but the surname field, have a classmate say my mother surnamed liu, I definitely tell you is my mother also not surname liu, said don't understand my mother surnamed liu who are? , of course, if you call me = = =, I will feel hospitable, the title of my speech is the beautiful campus, my home is where I first statement, the following point of view, for my personal identity, if got everyone's identity, my pleasure.
Warm, all things recovery, the river of the branches of the weeping willows stretch opened the yellow green leaves, like a natural barrier at the edge of campus, the river flows slowly, play a QuChun, please we try a grateful heart to feel the nature has given us all this, also grateful for our school to the picturesque environment in which to learn, because Thanksgiving will have more mining the society, because Thanksgiving will be sincere friendship, in the same way, because Thanksgiving will be the beautiful and - harmonic campus, Thanksgiving is not just a behavior, is also a state of mind. Why do you say so? Below I ask you a question: "the school motto of tsinghua university is a" unyielding and hold world with virtue ", so what is our motto?" Understand please raise your hand! Ok, I'll tell everyone "building new, build industry for fei" and this is our school spirit, of course, you can go to the website login web site inspection.
I think this is also our most students talk about school proud of! Actually put this as a school proud capital, is the school of sorrow! Spring is coming, life, it is a good place for rest after dinner, we also exercise our will, in short I insist every day after night lessons will go around the large training run on two or three laps, not only exercise the body itself, also formed the habit of meditation, and our school dining hall, from 7 o 'clock in the morning to night lessons, as to have a meal at any time, just I love this kind of lining up to buy the rice. And the school's swimming pool (right about swimming pool events, knower silent, said this also don't ask, don't carry forward the spirit of the pursuit of learning) you, cinemas (I promise myself go to the movies once a week, is not, of course, in the net cafe or bedroom). Finally, a recommendation or advice to the school, the fortunes of a world rise and fall, rise and fall, also is responsible for students, not just at the moment and after graduation is a duty, because you are out of school is a representative of the school. At the moment I think the school lacks a bit of "culture", the so-called "culture", of smell. Companies have a "culture" to grow, schools have a "culture" was able to do school in one hundred. At present the leadership of the very thought of. Statement again, this view person, such as can get recognized, my pleasure. If there is any dissent, let's discuss in private. Thank you very much to spend your precious time to listen to me this crap, I gratitude not jing.

Today I am very glad to be here to share with you my ideas of success. What is success? It is what everyone is longing for.Sometimes success would be rather simple. Winning a game is success; getting a high grade in the exam is success; making a new friend is success; even now I am standing here giving my speech is somehow also success.
However, as a person’s whole life is concerned, success becomes very
complicated. Is fortune success? Is fame success? Is high social status success? No, I don’t think so. I believe success is the realization of people’s hopes and ideals.Nowadays, in the modern society there are many people who are regarded as the successful. And the most obvious characteristics of hem are money, high position and luxurious life. So most people believe that s success and all that they do is for this purpose. But the problem is wether it is real success. We all know there are always more money, higher position and better condition in front of us. If we keep chasing them, where is the end? What will satisfy us at last? Therefore, we can see, to get the real Success we must need something inside, which is the realization ofpeople’ hopes and ideals.
Different people have different ideas about success; cause people’s hopes and ideas vary from one another. But I am sure every success is dear to everybody, cause it is not easy to come by, cause in the process of our striving for success, we got both our body and soul tempted, meanwhile we are enlightened by the most valuable qualities of human beings: love, patient, courage and sense of responsibility. These are the best treasures. So now I am very proud that I have this opportunity to stand here speaking to all of you. It is my success, cause I raise up to challenge my hope.
What is success? Everyone has his own interpretation as I do. But I am sure every success leads to an ever-brighter future. So ladies and gentlemen, believe in our hopes, believe in ourselves, we, every one of us, can make a successful life! Wish you all good success!

change the world? change ourselves
good evening, honorable judges, ladies and gentlemen.
it’s my great pleasure to stand here to present my speech—change the world, change ourselves.
it’s noticable that western holidays are becoming increasingly popular day by day, while chinese traditional festivals are being somewhat neglected. not long before about 10 doctors in beijing
university and qinghua unversity announced that we should reject the invasion of western holidays ,because they regard western holidays as an challenge against our traditional festivals and culture.
frankly speaking, i don’t quite agree with them.indeed, we should never neglect or even discard our traditonal festivals as china boasts a brilliant history and splendid traditions. (examples).but why can’t we absorb the meaningful western holidays and culture. there are obvious reasons why some western holidays are so popular in china. on the one hand, some of the western holidays which we chinese don’t have are reasonable and meaningful, such as father’s day and april fool’s day etc. on the other hand, the prevalence of
globalization enables western culture to prevail in china.
overwhelmed by such a trend, chinese unconsiciously get involved in western holidays and culture.
with the further development of the whole world, the cultural
communication between different countries and nations becomes faster and more and more important. we are indeed from different nations, but we are the citizens of the same world, so the outstanding culture of different nations is the commom wealth of everyone on the
earth.the only way for us to protect our traditional culture is to reject the foreign culture? the answer is definitely no. what we ought to do is to spare no effort to educate chinese to get to know and treasure our splendid traditions instead of rejecting foreign culture. only by educating can we set our confidence and belief towards our culture. only by educating can we preserve and promote the wealth that our ancesters left for us.
at last i’d like to share a famouse saying of gandhi with all of you ,that is:if you want to change the world, then you must change yourself first.”
five score years ago, a great american, in whose symbolic shadow we stand signed the emancipation proclamation.
this momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of negro slaves who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice.
it came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of captivity.
but one hundred years later, we must face the tragic fact that the negro is still not free.
one hundred years later, the life of the negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination.
one hundred years later, the negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity.
one hundred years later, the negro is still languishing in the corners of american society and finds himself an exile in his own land.
so we have come here today to dramatize an appalling condition.
in a sense we have come to our nation's capital to cash a check.
when the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the constitution and the declaration of independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every american was to fall heir.
this note was a promise that all men would be guaranteed the inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
it is obvious today that america has defaulted on this promissory note insofar as her citizens of color are concerned.
instead of honoring this sacred obligation, america has given the negro people a bad check which has come back marked "insufficient funds.
" but we refuse to believe that the bank of justice is bankrupt.
we refuse to believe that there are insufficient funds in the great vaults of opportunity of this nation.
so we have come to cash this check — a check that will give us upon demand the riches of freedom and the security of justice.
we have also come to this hallowed spot to remind america of the fierce urgency of now.
this is no time to engage in the luxury of cooling off or to take the tranquilizing drug of gradualism.
now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice.
now is the time to open the doors of opportunity to all of god's children.
now is the time to lift our nation from the quicksands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood.
it would be fatal for the nation to overlook the urgency of the moment and to underestimate the determination of the negro.
this sweltering summer of the negro's legitimate discontent will not pass until there is an invigorating autumn of freedom and equality.
nineteen sixty-three is not an end, but a beginning.
those who hope that the negro needed to blow off steam and will now be content will have a rude awakening if the nation returns to business as usual.
there will be neither rest nor tranquility in america until the negro is granted his citizenship rights.
the whirlwinds of revolt will continue to shake the foundations of our nation until the bright day of justice emerges.
but there is something that i must say to my people who stand on the warm threshold which leads into the palace of justice.
in the process of gaining our rightful place we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds.
let us not seek to satisfy our thirst for freedom by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred.
we must forever conduct our struggle on the high plane of dignity and discipline.
we must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into physical violence.
again and again we must rise to the majestic heights of meeting physical force with soul force.
the marvelous new militancy which has engulfed the negro community must not lead us to distrust of all white people, for many of our white brothers, as evidenced by their presence here today, have come to realize that their destiny is tied up with our destiny and their freedom is inextricably bound to our freedom.
we cannot walk alone.
and as we walk, we must make the pledge that we shall march ahead.
we cannot turn back.
there are those who are asking the devotees of civil rights, "when will you be satisfied?" we can never be satisfied as long as our bodies, heavy with the fatigue of travel, cannot gain lodging in the motels of the highways and the hotels of the cities.
we cannot be satisfied as long as the negro's basic mobility is from a smaller ghetto to a larger one.
we can never be satisfied as long as a negro in mississippi cannot vote and a negro in new york believes he has nothing for which to vote.
no, no, we are not satisfied, and we will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream.
i am not unmindful that some of you have come here out of great trials and tribulations.
some of you have come fresh from narrow cells.
some of you have come from areas where your quest for freedom left you battered by the storms of persecution and staggered by the winds of police brutality.
you have been the veterans of creative suffering.
continue to work with the faith that unearned suffering is redemptive.
go back to mississippi, go back to alabama, go back to georgia, go back to louisiana, go back to the slums and ghettos of our northern cities, knowing that somehow this situation can and will be changed.
let us not wallow in the valley of despair.
i say to you today, my friends, that in spite of the difficulties and frustrations of the moment, i still have a dream.
it is a dream deeply rooted in the american dream.
i have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "we hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal."
i have a dream that one day on the red hills of georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slaveowners will be able to sit down together at a table of brotherhood.
i have a dream that one day even the state of mississippi, a desert state, sweltering with the heat of injustice and oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.
i have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.
i have a dream today.
i have a dream that one day the state of alabama, whose governor's lips are presently dripping with the words of interposition and nullification, will be transformed into a situation where little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls and walk together as sisters and brothers.
i have a dream today.
i have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight, and the glory of the lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together.
this is our hope.
this is the faith with which i return to the south.
with this faith we will be able to hew out of the mountain of despair a stone of hope.
with this faith we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful symphony of brotherhood.
with this faith we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day.
this will be the day when all of god's children will be able to sing with a new meaning, "my country, 'tis of thee, sweet land of liberty, of thee i sing.
land where my fathers died, land of the pilgrim's pride, from every mountainside, let freedom ring."
and if america is to be a great nation this must become true.
so let freedom ring from the prodigious hilltops of new hampshire.
let freedom ring from the mighty mountains of new york.
let freedom ring from the heightening alleghenies of pennsylvania!
let freedom ring from the snowcapped rockies of colorado!
let freedom ring from the curvaceous peaks of california!
but not only that; let freedom ring from stone mountain of georgia!
let freedom ring from lookout mountain of tennessee!
let freedom ring from every hill and every molehill of mississippi.
from every mountainside, let freedom ring.
when we let freedom ring, when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of god's children, black men and white men, jews and gentiles, protestants and catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old negro spiritual, "free at last! free at last! thank god almighty, we are free at last!"

Someone said “we are reading the first verse of the first chapter of a book, whose pages are infinite”。 I don’t know who wrote these words, but I’ve always liked them as a reminder that the future can be anything we want it to be。 We are all in the position of the farmers。 If we plant a good seed ,we reap a good harvest。 If we plant nothing at all, we harvest nothing at all。
We are young。 “How to spend the youth?” It is a meaningful question。 To answer it, first I have to ask “what do you understand by the word youth?” Youth is not a time of life, it’s a state of mind。 It’s not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips or supple knees。 It’s the matter of the will。 It’s the freshness of the deep spring of life。
A poet said “To see a world in a grain of sand, and a heaven in a wild flower, hold infinity in the palm of your hand, and eternity in an hour。 Several days ago, I had a chance to listen to a lecture。 I learnt a lot there。 I’d like to share it with all of you。 Let’s show our right palms。 We can see three
lines that show how our love。career and life is。 I have a short line of life。 What about yours? I wondered whether we could see our future in this way。 Well, let’s make a fist。 Where is our future? Where is our love, career, and life? Tell me。Yeah, it is in our hands。 It is held in ourselves。
We all want the future to be better than the past。 But the future can go better itself。 Don’t cry because it is over, smile because it happened。 From the past, we’ve learnt that the life is tough, but we are tougher。 We’ve learnt that we can’t choose how we feel, but we can choose what about it。 Failure doesn’t mean you don’t have it, it does mean you should do it in a different way。 Failure doesn’t mean you should give up, it does mean you must try harder。
As what I said at the beginning, “we are reading the first verse of the first chapter of a book, whose pages are infinite”。 The past has gone。 Nothing we do will change it。 But the future is in frront of us。 Believe that what we give to the world, the world will give to us。 And from today on, let’s be the owners of ourselves, and speak out “We are the world, we are the future。”
Good afternoon, everyone! The topic of my speech today is “Being a Good Listener”. Good listening can always show respect, promote understanding, and improve interpersonal relationship. Many people suggest that parents should listen more to their children, so they will understand them better, and find it easy to narrow the generation gap; teachers should listen more to their students, then they can meet their needs better, and place themselves in a good relationship with their students; students should listen more to their classmates, thus they will help and learn from each other, and a friendship is likely to be formed. What I want to stress is that each of us should listen more to others. Show your respect and never stop others till they finish their talk; show you are interested by a supportive silence or a knowing smile; be open-minded to different opinions even though you don’t like them. In a word, good listening can really enable us to get closer to each other. Thank you for your listening!
