Migrant Workers- Constructors of Our Cities Nowadays more and more migrant workers or peasant
workers have poured into the cities. This trend has merits and demerits for the economic development of present China. Please write an essay and give a comprehensive analysis of the impacts migrant workers have had and will have on various aspects of people’s life, in urban areas as well as in rural areas.
With the reform and opening-up policy being implemented, our national economy is developing rapidly and the living standard of average Chinese people is ameliorated step by step, especially in big cities. However, in some rural areas, the living standard of some peasants is rather low. Due to the scarcity of arable land, the surplus laborers have to go out of the poor rural areas and flood into some cosmopolises to make a living, or earn as a prodigious amount of money as they could, so as to realize their dream of becoming wealthy. With more and more migrant workers like these streaming into the cities, there is an ambivalent feeling towards them. No one denies the important contribution that rural workers have made to the economic development of present China. They have done most of dirty, dangerous and underpaid jobs in heavy industries, construction sites and other fields that city residents are unwilling to enter into. Meanwhile, some rural workers with higher education certification do their best in high-technology areas. Therefore, they have become an indispensable part of urban life to a point where the machine of a city cannot operate without those cogs, however small and unnoticed. Furthermore, these migrant workers earn money with their own hand. With this money, they can pay for their children’s education, improve their living condition, and sometimes support their helpless parents back at home. This serves as a means to narrow the gap between urban and rural life. However, there are some people who maintain that rural people should stay at their hometown. Those people complain that migrant workers have threatened to take the already scarce urban jobs, while many more rural ones are waiting for a chance to compete for employment. Those with anti-migrant attitude also blame them for the sharp rise in the crime rate in the cities. For example, we sometimes see thieves from the countryside who slip their hands into others’ bags. Also because the shelters where the workers dwell are dirty and stink, they have defaced the city’s image in some way. Besides, with the floating population increasing, the extra consumption of electricity, water, and other resources like public facilities adds to the city’s already heavy burden. Despite the problems posed by migrants, I think, one thing is certain: a grand, prosperous edifice of our country is based on the work of millions of migrant workers and peasant workers. We need them and should give them more preferential conditions. At the same time, to educate them to conform to the basic moral values and to observe the laws becomes urgent. Once their consciousness enhanced, they can bring us a better city life.

Europe's deadly outbreak of a rare form of E. coli bacteria has brought new attention to food safety issues. One of the problems when people get sick from food is that the simplest question is often difficult or even impossible to answer. Just what did the people eat that made them sick?
Of course, one way to avoid these medical mysteries is to keep dangerous organisms out of the food supply. This is easier said than done, but scientists keep looking for new ways.
Scientists in the United States have developed an experimental system that uses a high-tech optical scanner. The inspection system is meant for packing houses where produce is sorted for market.
The system is designed to identify the presence of contaminants like soil or animal waste on fresh produce. These can be sources of Escherichia coli, better known as E. coli. E. coli bacteria naturally live in the intestines of humans and many animals. Most kinds of E. coli are harmless but some can make people sick.
The new scanner can also show damage and imperfections that might make the produce unappealing to shoppers.
Scientists designed the system at a Department of Agriculture research center in Beltsville, Maryland. Moon Kim of the Agricultural Research Service led the team.
MOON KIM: "We were requested, we were asked, to develop a method to detect contamination in produce. So we started with the apple as the model sample."
The scanner uses a high-speed camera placed over the conveyer belt that moves the produce along. As the apples move along the belt, the scanner captures images of each piece of fruit.
The system is equipped with an ultraviolet lamp and a halogen lamp that produces near-infrared light. A spectrograph device can use the near-infrared light bouncing off an apple to show evidence of damage. The ultraviolet light can show contaminants.
Moon Kim says the team hopes the system will be available before long.
MOON KIM: "We are targeting for development in commercial plants for the next several years."
The scanner can direct a sorting machine to separate the bad apples from the good ones. The system is currently able to show the surface of only half the apple as it speeds by. The inventers hope to improve the process so it can show the whole surface.

as the sun sprays its light, the air is pervaded by the smell of spring! when you look from the fourth floor of the no. 3 teaching building, a large picture you will probably entitle it fresh green is unfolded before your eyes. you feel astonished at the sight of the blooming white orchids along the road to the school canteen, especially at the amazing speed at which they climb up the tree!
its spring, my favorite season, an outburst of hope.
one day in spring, on my way back to the dorm, an unusual scene came into my sight. onto the playground ran a girl and three boys, followed by a large group of people. what was happening? oh, many a student was playing rope skipping there!some skipped on their own;others did one by one with a longer rope. it suddenly reminded me of the skipping contest on the following tuesday, attended by all the departments. no delay any more, i hurried to look for my classmates!
here they were! i spotted them right away at one corner of the playground. apparently, the team had not decided upon the candidates to control the long rope. boys and girls, nearly every one on the scene tried once. but girls seemed to have a better command of the rope. so two girls assumed the key responsibility.
pa, pa, pa, pa at a moderate speed, we began to practice.no one knew how well it would do as the team was just composed of volunteers who love sports. the first member rushed in and out, with a swift skip in the halfway. good! i whispered.then the second one repeated the same perfect performance.then the third, the fourth... great! i could not help crying out. a slight hope of winning sneaked into my mind, maybe we can win... pa! a loud crash disturbed my dreaming. the rope had stopping whirling for the first time. take it easy. its just a little... hardly had i finished my self-comforting than the second stop followed. a breath of wind chilled my heart. i could sense that everyone appeared to be clam, as they always were.without a word of blame, a big hand patted on the two unlucky ones. have one more try! as someone shouted, the rope came back to life again.
sure, we should try!
though full of hope, we were not blessed with perfect techniques at that time. the two unlucky ones had trouble again and again at the second round, third round... it seemed as if they had got lost in a psychological maze, trying to locate the eit in no time. however, against their good wish, it was more haste,less speed.
a fit of desperation seized me, but i soon got over it. for i felt obliged to give comfort to the two poor guys, telling them not to worry and i knew a few words would bring courage to continue the practice! to my great joy, i was not the only one thinking in this way. slowly, all the despair melted away in the daylight. smiles, jokes, and friendly tones filled the air with warm spring smell. we found the sun still shining high up the sky, spreading light and hope.
we restarted. although not much improvement was made during the first day of training, however, i knew no one cared,and no one cared about that prize. for we were progressing towards our goal. it was the precious teamwork and the hope of spring that we really cared.
